Indie World Japan Recap | 4.15.2021

Nintendo Japan had their own iteration of the April 2021 Indie World presentation that covered different titles than what was shown off in the West. Nintendo’s Indie World initiative in Japan is a bit different than the West. Here, not only do they show off new titles, but also slightly older titles that gamers in Japan might have overlooked or just generally missed out on. Another interesting tidbit is the presentation aspect exclusive to this iteration of the Indie World videos. Videos like this or posts made under the “Indie World” label in Japan often feature commentary by two 8-bit characters, Boku and Soejima, and provides quite a different atmosphere than the English language presentations.

Below are all of the titles that were shown off at the Japanese Indie World April 2021 video showcase in chronological order. There was some crossover here, but overall, the titles that were shown off were quite different. Here’s what was shown off, accompanied by release information for Japan and the West.

Torakichi no Tora Kitchen | May 2021 | Video Timestamp
What would happen if some cute cats ran a sushi kitchen out of a food truck? Well, it might look something like this. Torakichi no Tora Kitchen a puzzle game that tasks players with delivering the correct sushi to customers. Obviously just simply sending the plates down the line won’t be enough here. You’ll have to alter the lanes with some helpful gorillas to ensure that the right orders get to the right places. The plates themselves are color coded, which makes it easier to understand where to send them. Things get more complicated the further you get as the game will have you increasing or decreasing the amount of sushi on the plate, using warps and more.

Sumire no Sora | May 27, 2021 | Video Timestamp
This stylized 2D side scrolling adventure puts players in the role of a girl named Sumire. She meets a mysterious flower spirit that promises to grant the girl her most desired wish…as long as she agrees to do what the spirit says. The goal here is to explore this colorful world and chat with people and animals over the course of a day. When dusk hits, you can then see how your choices affected the world around her. This title was originally shown off at Tokyo Game Show 2020 and will have full English support upon release. While the English website currently says the game is still under development, it's possible that GameTomo will have something to announce for western markets soon.
And there you have it. You can check out the Japanese Indie World Presentation in its entirety below.
