Nintendo has taken a huge step to prevent scalpers from profiting off of their new console in Japan. Announced via a news release, the company is working with the three largest reselling sites in the country, Mercari, Yahoo Auctions and Rakuten Rakuma, to “prevent fraudulent listings of Nintendo related products, including the Nintendo Switch 2.” While this doesn’t mean that all listings of Switch 2 units will be removed on each of the services, violators may have their items delisted or even their accounts suspended.
Yahoo Auctions has completely banned the sale of Switch 2, while juggernaut Mercari has taken a different approach. The latter will allow the sale of the system under the following conditions:
- Potentially fraudulent listings will be removed
- Listings using images taken from the internet will be removed
- High-end/high priced items will require ID verification
- The ability to sell Switch 2 via the auction function will be disabled
While this system isn’t perfect, it will hopefully prevent the rampant scalping that many have seen over the years in Japan and around the globe. The Switch 2 launches next week on June 5.
