Stellar Blade | TGS 2026 Hands-on | Nintendo Switch 2

A bit of late addition to the show, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Stellar Blade was available to play at the Sega booth at Tokyo Game Show 2026. Although the game was quite the showcase on the PlayStation 5, what conceits were made to get the game running on the Nintendo Switch 2? Well, I went hands on with the game on the show floor and left pretty impressed.
Background on Demo & Gameplay
Shift Up brought the game to the show and showed it off at Sega's booth in the partner section. Here, there were six demo stations available all playable in docked mode. The demo picks up right at the beginning of the game, with The Colony deploying their squadron of elite soldiers in another attempt to take back the planet. You’re introduced to Eve and Tachy who are some of the few survivors that make their way across the wastelands to taking out a a slew of enemies until they encounter an Alpha Naytiba.

The gameplay itself is easy enough to pick up. Quick attacks are assigned to Y, Strong Attacks to X, Dodges to A, a Jump to A, and a Guard/Parry to L. The key here isn’t just to rush and and spam attacks, at least with stronger foes. Guards and Parries are the things you’ll want to focus on to take out enemies efficiently. Generally speaking, combat felt fast, responsive and fun. Successfully performing a parry and opening up an enemy felt very satisfying. Even if you mess up on the timing, the action is fun enough to make you want to keep trying to get better at the game. If you haven’t played the game before like me and are into action games, you’ll feel right at home.

There did appear to be some options to mess around with costumes that I spotted while waiting in line for the demo, but I (idiotically) did not try it out for myself with the demo. Also, as far as I could tell, things in the demo were limited to Japanese, which makes sense considering the venue.

Visuals & Performance
The look, performance and sound of Stellar Blade is quite impressive, however things are not perfect here. The character models look great, featuring rich detail on their faces and outfits. The game does take a bit of hit when it comes to things like hair, some textures and the environment. The rendering on the hair is usually okay, but there are sometimes issues with flickering or with the hair clipping through the character, including sometimes on their head/face areas when in cutscenes. Explosions and associated debris also looks a little bit underwhelming and features a bit less detail than what you will find on other platforms. Simply put, this is definitely a pared back version of the game, and it shows in some points of the game. Fortunately when these issues do pop up, they’re happening during cutscenes so the gameplay remains largely unaffected. Performance is also very consistent, running around 60 frames per second pretty consistently throughout the experience. I might be coming off as a bit negative here and nitpicky, but I still have walked away pretty impressed with what I’ve seen.
Conclusion
Stellar Blade on the Switch 2 is shaping up nicely. It feels great to play and the visuals are pretty decent. If you’re hoping for more visual fidelity, obviously, picking up the game on another platform is the way to go. Despite the graphical issues, they did not detract from my enjoyment with the demo. The controls are tight, the game runs consistently and it is just fun to play. Having never bought the game on PS5 or PC, the Switch 2 version is definitely on my radar, even more so since playing this demo.

But let’s turn things over to you. What do you think about Stellar Blade on the Switch 2? Are you planning on picking it up? Do you already have it on another platform? Sound off in the comments down below. We’d love to hear from you.
