The Lord of the Rings: War in the North from 2011 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is seeing new life once again on all major platforms, including the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. This re-release brings the game to the current lineup of consoles and also brings several enhancements and upgrades not found in the original. The game takes place at the same time as the Lord of the Rings trilogy and allows players to take control of the Ranger Eradan, the dwarf Farin or the elf Andriel, all originals characters made for the game in this third person action title. You’ll run into familiar faces (like Aragorn and Gandalf), be able to customize your characters and more. This new edition will also allow for character hot swapping on the fly, the ability to lock-on to enemies, UI improvements, additional save slots, and gyro support. War in the North also supports three player online co-op, two player local co-op play and 60 fps visuals. Unfortunately the Nintendo Switch version is limited to 30 fps and does not include local co-op.
One other interesting tidbit that Aspyr mentioned had to do with upcoming titles. The press release also said, “Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!” What this means exactly is up for debate, but I’m hoping for re-releases of The Two Towers (check out our retro review here!) and Return of the King from the GCN/PS2/Xbox era.
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North launches on the Switch and Switch 2 on August 11 in North America and on August 18 in Europe. A Japanese release has yet to be confirmed. You can see the trailer for the game below.
