Dragon Quest XII Rebooted, New DQ Monsters Game Announced

The 40th anniversary video presentation for Dragon Quest was filled with a few surprises. Dragon Quest XII, which was originally revealed with the subtitle “Flames of Fate,” has had the development cycle rebooted and renamed. Known now as Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, the game has been reworked from scratch. Exact reasons for the change in direction were not revealed, but it was noted that Flames of Fate “hit a lot of hurdles along the way. As for Beyond Dreams, Yuji Hori revealed a bit more about the story saying:

“It’s a story of a young hero who’s beset by strange visions in their sleep. What lies beyond dreams? Surely not a world of darkness, but a bright and exciting future.”

Hori also confirmed that like the games before it, Beyond Dreams will feature "Akira Toriyama’s characters and Koichi Sugiyama’s music.” No release information or window were shared. The last mainline Dragon Quest title, Dragon Quest XI originally released on both the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 in Japan in 2017 and was followed by a release in English speaking territories in 2018 for PS4 and PC. A Switch version followed in 2019, an Xbox One version in 2020 and Stadia in 2021. A Switch 2 version is scheduled to release on September 24 this year, but unfortunately will not have cross save support for the Switch 1 version, nor will there be an upgrade pass. The physical version will also arrive via Game Key Card. DQXI on Switch 2 will retail for ¥5,478 / $39.99 (USD) and the Japanese version will not feature English support (just like the original Switch version).

Outside of Dragon Quest XII, Square Enix also revealed that a new Dragon Quest Monsters game with the subtitle “The Withered World” is “coming soon” to the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Windows. You can see the entire video below.
