Sony is getting in on the language locked system game. Announced at the November 2025 State of Play, a Japanese Language only Digital Edition PlayStation 5 (825 GB SSD) is set to hit retailers in Japan on Friday, November 21 and retail for ¥55,000 ($357 USD). This is significantly cheaper than the current digital edition base model price of ¥72,980 ($474 USD) and very close to the retail price of the Japanese-Language Nintendo Switch 2 (¥49,980). Here is a look at the current pricing for the PlayStation 5 in Japan:
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition | ¥72,980
- PlayStation 5 (w/ disc drive) | ¥79,980
- PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Controller Double Pack Digital Edition | ¥82,980
- PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Controller Double Pack | ¥89,980
- PlayStation 5 Pro | ¥119,980
The console originally released in 2020 in Japan at ¥39,980 / ¥49,980 for the digital only and standard system respectively.
Sales for the PlayStation 5 have been pretty strong across the globe with 84.2 million units being sold to date, but relatively weak in Japan. Of these, Sony has sold 7,136,895 units in Japan (via Gematsu). This move by Sony specifically for the Japanese market is a gamble, but one that Sony is willing to try out. The same strategy by Nintendo has been pretty successful. Of the over 10 million Nintendo Switch 2’s out in the wild, 2.64 million of them have been sold in Japan overwhelmingly via the Japanese-Language only version of the system.
Pre-orders opened up for the system starting on Thursday, November 13 ahead of the system’s release. It will be available at all retailers across the country. Being a Nintendo focused outlet, we usually don’t cover PlayStation related news, but the connection to Japan makes this warranted. We’ll have more on this as it develops across the coming weeks and months.
