The Switch 2 is getting off to an historic start in its home territory. In just four days, the Nintendo Switch 2 moved 947,931 units, making it the largest console launch in Japan of all time. The previous record was held by the PlayStation 2 with 631,522 units sold through retail (via Game Data Library and them here). The original Switch launched with 330,637 units sold in March 2017 (via Famitsu). The numbers here do not contain sales data for the My Nintendo Store online.
Software for the Nintendo Switch 2 is also going strong in Japan. Mario Kart World, the marquee launch title for the system sold an unprecedented 782,566 units. A total of five Switch 2 titles broke the top 10 this week in Japan, with Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut coming out strong.
Nintendo revealed earlier this week that the Switch 2 has sold over 3.5 million units in the first four days on the market worldwide. The numbers remain a bit unclear when taking into consideration the My Nintendo Store. During the first round of lotteries in Japan, NCL president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that 2.2 million applicants entered for a chance to purchase the console.
