Japanese Kirby Happy Meal Toys Discontinued, Wave 3 Canceled

Here we go again. Due to popular demand, the second wave of Kirby themed Happy Meal toys at McDonald’s in Japan has been discontinued. The news came within 24 hours of the toys being released on Friday (March 1). Yahoo News Japan reported lines early in the morning on Friday as well as people simply using the mobile order function on the McDonald’s Japan app to circumvent the lines. On social media, the hashtag “McDonald’s Congestion” (マック激混み Mac Gekikomi) was trending from Friday morning. Numerous listings for the toys showed up on popular resale site Mercari as of around 1 p.m. Toys were priced from ¥600 - ¥3,000 a piece in some cases, with some listing the set of toys for ¥7,000. Customers expressed their dissatisfaction online and general disdain for the resellers.
In addition to the second wave of toys selling out quickly, McDonald’s Japan issued a statement saying that the third wave, which was scheduled to kick off next Friday, March 8, will not be held due to popular demand. This wave was going to offer toys from both Wave 1 (February 23 - 29) and Wave 2 (March 1 - 7). The company apologized for not being able to meet customers’ expectations and the will continue to strive to offer appealing products to customers in the future.

A similar situation happened last week as the first wave of Kirby toys sold out quickly. You can read more about that here, or check out our translation of the original announcement here.
