Nintendo Shutting Down Online Services for Wii U and 3DS April 2024

Nintendo is officially sunsetting the online capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. From April 2024, the company will discontinue online play and other functionality that uses online communication. This includes co-operative play, internet rankings and data distribution. As of right now, it will still be possible to use online services for Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter. Other exceptions will be up to individual publishers.

While online communication and functionality will end, users will still be able to download update data and re-download purchased software. StreetPass will still be available, but Spot Pass, which relies on the internet to function, will no longer be available after next April. Nintendo will announce a specific date for the closure at a later time.

While a bit disappointing to some, the writing has been on the wall for Nintendo's previous generation of systems for some time. The ability to purchase games via the 3DS and Wii U eShops was closed down earlier this year.
