Castlevania turns 40 on September 26, 2026 and Konami has prepared something for fans. As part of the anniversary for the series, Komai is offering the original Famicom Disk System / NES version of Castlevania to fans on App Store and Google Play. The game will only be available for a limited time from Friday, September 25 until Saturday, October 24 at 11:59 p.m. JST. Konami further says:
“As a token of our gratitude to all the players who have supported the series over the years, we are delighted to share the game that started it all and hope you will enjoy experiencing the beginning of the Castlevania saga as part of this special 40th anniversary celebration.”
Konami also mentions that as long as the game is downloaded during this time period, fans will be able to play the game even after the promotion has ended. From just downloading and trying out the game for myself briefly, this version features an touch-screen controls and a singular save state. As of right now, it does not appear to offer support for external controllers (I tried it out with a USB C Backbone controller on my iPhone and no dice).
